Research Topic

The topic that I have chosen to research is equity and excellence in care and education of children, families, and EC professional. I choose this topic because early childhood programs are not on the same level. There are programs that are in urban areas that are not high quality centers, therefore creating an unequal development for these children.  Someday I would like to see early childhood teacher and professional on the level that other professional are, being paid for the high quality work they perform. I think we would see less turn over if we were able to have salaries that reflect the work they do. The early childhood field is one of the most important careers that there is we, hold the future in our hands. Any suggesting or questions are welcome. Thank you

  1. Hi Naquetta, So how about a study that examines one aspect of what you've mentioned above? Teacher's salaries: Could you do a simple study utilizing a confidential survey tool like Survey Monkey, to survey teachers regarding their salaries, time in the profession at one school, cost of living in their area, and the salaries of any other income earners in the family. You could do a comparison of how teacher salaries affect teacher turnover, and include in the study local cost of living and whether or not the teacher benefits from the salaries of others in the household, in addition to her own. Do other salaries in the household influence an early childhood teachers ability to stay in the profession? Another survey might simply be to gain an understanding on how many people from the general population know what early childhood teachers in their area make.

    Just some ideas. Dot

  2. Naquetta-Your research topic sounds very interesting! I agree with you that early childhood is not on the same level as other professionals and this is shown not only through pay, but the way early childhood professionals are treated at times. They sometimes treat us as babysitters and see no benefit to what we do other than having a person to watch their child. I look forward to hearing more about your study.
