Poverty in India

In 2001, India was estimated to have about 1.03 billion citizens; India's population is second to China.  It is stated that in 1999-2002 there was over 200 million people living in poverty in India.
In India half of the children which accounts for over 62 million are under the age of five and are malnourished. More than thirty percent of their newborns are considerably underweight.
India accounts for more than 20 percent of the children who are out of school. India has the largest number in the world of children who are under the age of sixteen and working.

  1. Thanks Naquetta,
It sounds pretty bleak for many children in India. In your research, did you learn anything about what the nation is doing to try to combat poverty or assist children or families in need? Is child labor an accepted practice with the leaders of this country or a problem they aren't able to keep up on?

  2. You know it's interesting that India isn't the only country that has a large number of poverty stricken individuals. Did you know that Nigeria is second on that list? Me and my wife looked it up the other day when I noticed that North Carolina has 1.2 million that is 42% under the poverty level in America. That is sad, plus they all are unemployed and don't have education to get the "good" paying jobs. We then found out that China is on the move with it's poverty, they reported that most of the people that were poor are now rich. I wonder why?
